The dog and cat wellness in- dustry continues its strong trend of ongoing humanization, and that’s one of the catalysts of the rise in sales of supplements for pets in the past couple
The biggest trends in supplements for dogs and cats are products that address multiple concerns such as digestive, hip and
joint, skin and coat, and dental
products, said Steve Twohig, vice
president of sales for Nutri-Vet
LLC in Boise, Idaho.
Nancy Fedelem, owner of
Salty’s Pet Supply and Fang &
Feather, both in Portland, Ore.,
named probiotics, joint support, dental health and calming
supplements as products flying
off the shelves in her stores.
“All dogs and cats, from pup-
pies and kittens to senior pets,
will benefit from these supple-
ments,” she said. “Depending on
the pet’s age and breed, a combi-
nation of supplements can make
all the difference in their quality
The latest trend in supple-
ments is functional soft chews,
as soft chews are easier for older
animals and smaller animals to
consume than tablets, said Scott
Garmon, president of Garmon
Corp., maker of NaturVet prod-
ucts in Temecula, Calif.
“This new delivery method is
also a great way for pet parents
to bond with their pets,” he said.
Katherine Kear, acting product manager at Tomlyn/Vetoqui-nol USA in Fort Worth, Texas,
noted that behavior continues to
be an issue faced by pet owners
as well as joint issues and, next in
frequency, digestive problems.

lengths and slip leads, and seven bright colors.

the PortoBallo, the GoofBall
and the StickBall. The toys are
incredibly durable, have exciting
bounce patterns, are chuck-able
with a ball launcher, and are able
to dispense treats so dogs can
continue to be engaged at home.
NEW TO THE CATEGORY
People are looking for supplements that are made in the USA with organic and natural
ingredients, said Chelsea Joyce, marketing manager for Pet Releaf in Sheridan, Colo. Pet
Releaf has responded to that trend with its newest products, she added.
“We have launched our Edibites for dogs, which are cannabidiol (CBD)-rich sup-
plemental treats in four yummy flavors, as well as our CBD Hemp Oil for both dogs and
cats,” she said. “This year, we are scheduled to release our Edibits for cats, our assorted
flavor bag of Edibites for dogs and our gluten-free Edibite selection.”
Nutri-Vet LLC in Boise, Idaho, recently introduced Food Transition Support, which
consists of seven individual stick packs, each containing a high-end probiotic and
designed to offer digestive support when changing a pet’s food, said Steve Twohig, vice
president of sales for the company.
“Additionally, we introduced the Nutri-Vet Dental Flossing Chews for Dogs,” Twohig
said. “It’s the next generation of dental chew treats aside from cleaning—it actually
polishes and flosses as well.”
Petchup in Westminster, Colo., recently added two flavors to round out its product
offering for dogs, said Anthony Williams, creator and owner of the company.
“Just like people have flavor preferences, so do dogs and cats,” Williams said. “We
decided to utilize other flavors coupled with memorable names to add to the fun and
enjoyment of our Petchup customer’s experience. We introduced Bark B-Q (pork) and
Mutt-N-aise (turkey) as our newest flavors for dogs.”
This year, Petchup will delve into a new product line for cats, he said.
