NEW TO THE CATEGORY
Ashley Rademacher, animal care
and education coordinator for Zoo
Med Laboratories Inc. in San Luis
Obispo, Calif., said the company’s
newest reptile lighting products
include energy-saving, beautiful,
bright LEDs and high-quality,
high-output T5 UVB lamps.
“Our Reptisun UVB lamps now
are available in high output T5s,”
Rademacher said. “[They] produce reliable UVB that is available at further distances
than T8s, making them appropriate for large or tall terrariums.”
Zoo Med also offers LED lights in several forms.
“[Our] new energy-efficient LED terrarium lighting with a low profile design also
boasts a unique modular design that allows for replacing or swapping out LED mod-
ules,” Rademacher said. “Each module comes standard with three different colored
light emitting diodes, including white, red and blue. The 6500 K daylight high output
LEDs provide truly naturalistic, brilliant white lighting. This light supports a pet’s
vision and promotes natural behaviors such as feeding and breeding responses.”
One of the company’s most recent introductions is the Repti Therm Habitat
Heater, an industrial-strength heater for heavy tortoises and other large reptile cage
applications, Rademacher said. The 40-watt heater is equipped with an LED indicator
to indicate when the heater is on and automatic thermostat protection that shuts
the heater off if it reaches 119 degrees Fahrenheit ( 48 C) to prevent overheating.
Chris LeRose, aquatic division manager for Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp. in Mansfield, Mass., said LEDs are new for the company.
“We’re finding LEDs are taking over the market and a decline in the T5 units and
old-school fluorescents,” he said. “We are starting to see an increase in T5 again
because people are not as happy with coil, but true hobbyists are adding them on to
their LED systems.”
Hagen’s new Fluval Aquasky LED Lights provide endless color blends to suit a
wide variety of aquatic environments, LeRose said.
Zilla in Franklin, Wis., a division of Central Garden & Pet Co., has focused its
heating and lighting on its G- 9 Technology.
“Using this, we have developed Zilla Mini Halogen bulbs, which produce a
high amount of heat from a very low wattage,” said Ryan McVeigh, brand manag-
er. “These bulbs are up to 250 percent more efficient than a standard incandescent
spotlight and are much more robust so they have a much longer life. They are also
very small and allow us to create fixtures that are 4 inches or shorter.”
Zilla is releasing a line of lighting strip fixtures this year that will house both
the Mini UVB Fluorescent bulbs and the Mini Halogen bulbs. The fixtures, which are
only 1.5 inches tall, house up to six outlets for full coverage of heat and UVB over a
terrarium, while one outlet is dedicated to night heat, McVeigh said.
