A well-informed sales team can transform a simple question
into an occasion to educate consumers about the toys and
cross-sell multiple toys that meet a variety of needs, but cat
toy manufacturers must do their part as well.
“As designers and manufacturers of cat products, we
play a large role in making sure that our products are easy to
understand, so that a consumer can see an item on the shelf
and, based on the product design and packaging, know if it is
the right choice for their pet,” said Rita Zine-Himy, vice presi-
dent of product development for R2P Pet Group in Pleasanton,
Calif. “Our Categories line especially focuses on making the
purpose of the toys clear, utilizing a packaging system that
divides the products up by play type so that cat owners can
look at the packaging and know what the main element of the
toy is, or what category of play it is focused on.”
Imperial Cat in Morrilton, Ark., uses its packaging to
educate consumers about why cats need to play and the
importance of providing toys for them, said Kristie Hamilton,
director of sales.
“Cats are fun-loving creatures, so playing keeps them
happy and content,” Hamilton said. “When you play together,
it strengthens the bonds of love and trust between you and
Sarah Stone, marketing director for Worldwise Inc. in
Novato, Calif., said the company’s color-coded Petlinks System
provides a built-in merchandising system for retail stores.
“The Petlinks System educates consumers about the
needs of their pets and identifies the products that help meet
those needs, right on the packaging,” she said. “A toy set
that is merchandised by the Petlinks Needs System guides
consumers through a clean and organized assortment, en-
couraging them to purchase multiple products and increasing
register ring across all categories.”
When it comes to the higher-priced cat toys, education is
key, as consumers need to understand electronic toys, what
they do and why they cost more than nonelectronic toys,
“In 2016 we’ll be launching revamped Petlinks electronic
toy packaging that makes it even more clear to the consumer
that the toy is electronic and how it functions while still
emphasizing the commitment to safety and satisfaction that
carries over across all our product lines,” Stone said.
Pet owners gravitate to cat toys that promote interaction.
