Natural ingredients are important to dog owners in the
grooming products category, but what about scent? Does
the way a natural grooming product smells make that
“Providing natural grooming products is one thing,
but providing natural grooming products that smell great
is another,” said James Brandly, marketing coordinator for
TropiClean in Wentzville, Mo. “We, as humans, have a unique
sensory trigger when it comes to scents. Our sense of smell
is the only sensory system that collates with emotions. That’s
why we provide products that are enriched with ingredients such as papaya, kiwi and
coconut. We hope that with each use, we can trigger a refreshing, joyful emotion.”
When it comes to grooming products for both humans and pets, scent is
particularly significant, said Douglas Gleason, founder and president of TrueBlue
Pet Products in Los Angeles.
“There are two things that are hugely important in getting people to try a
new product: the packaging and the scent,” he said. “Of course the product has
to deliver in order to earn repeat purchases, but it’s packaging and scent that get
people to try something the first time.”
Scents can be tricky because they elicit a strong response from people and
can be polarizing, Gleason said.
“We’ve tested scents that some people love and others loathe,” he added.
Brad Kriser, founder and CEO of Kriser’s Natural Pet in Illinois, Colorado, Texas
and California, confirmed the importance of scent in grooming products.
“Scent is important as it is one of the first things the customer will do with the
bottle,” he said. “They will take a smell to make sure that they want this to be the
fragrance on their pet.”
