NEW IN HOLIDAY PRODUCTS
The holiday product category continues to grow, with manufacturers introducing
many new products for the 2016 holiday season.
“Almost all of our vendors have new products this year,” said Mike Dagne,
president and COO of Pet Palette LLC in Sykesville, Md. “Approximately one half of our
offerings this year are new, with new products coming from 11 vendors.”
Every year, West Paw Design of Bozeman, Mont., offers new holiday-themed
toys for dogs and cats, said owner and president Spencer Williams. This March, West
Paw Design released four new items: Star,
Stocking and Holiday Bear toys for dogs and
Mitten, a toy for cats.
“West Paw loves to offer pet parents
fun and festive gifts for their dogs and cats,”
Dazzling Paws Jewelry of Plover, Wis.,
launched its biggest collection yet this
spring. Many of the dog-breed-themed
jewelry designs are available as a pendant
and earrings, and most are crafted in the
U.S. from recycled sterling silver, said Myra
“Every dog owner deserves to be able to
proudly display the love of their fur family members,” she said. “Dazzling Paws Jewelry wanted
to fill that niche by providing breed-specific
designs with a unique artistic flair.”

Customer awareness of
ecological and health
issues is at an all-time
high, even when it
comes to holiday
gifts for pets and pet
owners, said Spencer
Williams, owner and
president of West Paw
Design. To that end,
the Bozeman, Mont.,
company offers retailers printed information
that lists the features
of their holiday items.
“West Paw Design
provides educational sell sheets to educate retailers about the safety and eco-friendly components of our holiday-themed toys,” Williams said.
Toni Shelaske, owner of Healthy Pet Products, which has two stores in the
Pittsburgh area, uses materials such as these to educate her staff.
“We familiarize our employees with all the latest items,” she said, noting that
this training helps her staff upsell. “Most customers, when shopping for a gift,
want to see all their
options and see what
others are buying.”

There’s no denying that a dog in a holiday
sweater is adorable—but it also is warm and
protected from the elements, a benefit retail-
ers should emphasize with customers.
“There is still the misconception that
dogs do not need cold-weather protection,”
said Mike Dagne, president and COO of Pet
Palette LLC in Sykesville, Md. “Retailers can
help their customers know that most breeds
of dog need a warm jacket and proper
protection during harsh winter weather, and

At Healthy Pet Products, which has two
stores in the Pittsburgh area, owner Toni
Shelaske trains staff to help customers find
cold weather gear that fits properly.
“First and foremost, consumers should know the
circumference of their dog’s chest in order to purchase the
correct-size coat or sweater,” she said. “However, we really
prefer they bring them in for a fitting.”
Pet Stop in Murrieta, Calif., keeps the sweaters just inside
the front door of the store during winter months.
“We always stock sweaters during the winter for the
smaller dogs,” said owner Shelly Dillingham. “They always do
well, and customers come in looking for them.”
Sweaters and jackets for dogs also sell well at Natural Pet
Food & Supplies in Temecula, Calif.
“We switch them out with the seasons,” said Annette Merrifield, assistant manager, noting that holiday-themed outfits
are popular with customers.
The store also sells booties year-round.
“People buy them for walking their dogs,” Merrifield said.
“The pavement gets hot and can hurt their feet.”
