The line between dictates in human nutri- tion and those in the canine world con- tinues to blur.
“Pets have become full-fledged family
members,” said Ward Johnson, co-founder
of Sojos in Minneapolis. “As such, more and
more pet parents are on a quest to feed the
healthiest pet food possible.”
Further, as pet owners feed their dogs reci-
pes that echo their own health and diet prefer-
ences, the popularity of natural/holistic foods
continues to grow, said Kirill Tikhomirov, vice
president of brand commercialization for Nu-
tram Pet Products in Elmira, Ontario, Canada.
“Pet owners have become more knowledgeable about the pitfalls of highly processed
ingredients, unnecessary fillers and preservatives in the foods their pets consume,” said
Lucy Postins, CEO and founder of The Honest
Kitchen in San Diego.
Mirroring well-established trends in the
broader consumer segment, natural pet products are being sought for three key reasons,
said Isaac Langleben, co-founder of Open
Farm in Toronto.
“The first is the positive impact that feed-
ing natural, cleaner, less-processed food has
on the health and wellness of pets,” he said.
“Secondly, there is increasing skepticism from
consumers in our industry surrounding ingre-
dient quality and transparency.”
Finally, consumers are more conscious
of the social impact of their purchasing de-
cisions, including pet products, Langleben
“They want products that are ethically
and sustainably sourced, and this desire
is driving them to the natural segment in
search of products that align with those values,” Langleben said.
The Quest for Health
Savvy consumers know the role a diet rich in natural ingredients plays in
maintaining a healthful lifestyle for the whole family—including their pets.
NEW TO THE NATURAL
The connection between simple, back-to-basics nutrition and better health finds
manufacturers answering the call for more natural, less-processed foods for dogs.
Two new recipes available from Sojos are specifically formulated for growing
puppies, said Ward Johnson, co-founder of Sojos in Minneapolis.
“As the first life-stage food in the raw, shelf-stable category, Sojos Complete
for Puppies combines raw, freeze-dried turkey and omega-rich salmon with
select superfoods and a targeted blend of essential vitamins and minerals,”
Caru Pet Food recently added two recipes to its Natural Stews line for dogs:
Turkey with Lamb and Chicken with Duck, said Adrian Pettyan, CEO and co-founder of the Vero Beach, Fla., company.
“Like our entire Natural Stews line, these grain-free recipes are prepared in a
USA human food plant, without genetically engineered ingredients,” Pettyan said.
Nutram Pet Products has added two formulas to its comprehensive line of
holistic dog food, said Kirill Tikhomirov, vice president of brand commercialization
for the Elmira, Ontario, Canada, company.
“Nutram T27 and T28 are both available in a mid-sized, 15-pound bag,”
Tikhomirov said. “These blends have been crafted and formulated to meet the
specific health needs of small and toy dog breeds.”
of Fresh, Raw
Food With the
Whether you call it “
freeze-dried” or “dehydrated” or
“shelf-stable raw,” what matters
most is that Sojos combines the
nutrition and taste of fresh, raw
food—with the convenience and
affordability of kibble.
In short, it’s raw made easy.
Just pour Sojos Complete into a
bowl, add water, and magic happens. Within minutes the 100%
natural ingredients spring back to
life with the flavors, textures and
abundant nutrition possible only
with real, raw food.
And yet freeze-dried Sojos Complete is surprisingly affordable. In
fact, an 8 lb. bag rehydrates to
more than 40 lbs. of nutritious,
fresh food. That’s less per serving
than comparable premium grain-free dog foods.
Sojos Complete is offered with
turkey, beef, lamb or goat as the
number one ingredient. And because Sojos’ gentle freeze-drying
process never exceeds 115°, all
the natural enzymes in raw meat
are carefully protected. Said another way, none of the natural
goodness is cooked out.
From Sojos Complete, to Sojos
Simply Meat dog treats, to new
Sojos Complete for Puppies—
they’re all made without genetically engineered ingredients,
fillers, preservatives, or anything
artificial. Just a short, sweet list
of entirely natural, human-grade
meat, veggies and fruits—all
blended with meticulous care under Sojos’ own roof.
