WHIPPET WINS BEST IN SHOW
AT NATIONAL DOG SHOW
A whippet named “Whiskey” won the Best In
Show title for 2018 at The National Dog Show
Presented by Purina, which was held in Philadelphia on Nov. 22.
A 3-year-old male weighing 30 pounds,
the canine came in with more than 120 Hound
Group firsts and 19 Bests in Show. He topped six
other group-winning canines advancing out of
the 1,992-dog competition at the all-breed show
hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia.
Coverage of the show and Whiskey’s triumphant moments were broadcast to a holiday
audience totaling some 20 million on NBC
Thanksgiving Day following the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Whiskey’s registered name is GCHP Pinnacle Tennessee Whiskey.
The following are the other 2018 National Dog Show Group Winners:
Terrier Group: a wire fox terrier named “King” of Rialto, Calif.
Toy Group: a Cavalier King Charles spaniel named “Bogie” of Derry, N.H.
Sporting: a Chesapeake Bay retriever named “Ducky” of Mattapoisett, Mass.
Non-Sporting: a Lhasa apso named “Billy” of Mililani, Hawaii
Working Group: a Doberman pinscher named “Irupe” of Sandy Hook, Conn.
Herding Group: a Pembroke Welsh corgi named “Bella” of Hudson, Ohio
AKC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CROWNS WINNERS
A whippet known as “Whiskey” earned the title of
Best in Show at the AKC National Championship
Presented by Royal Canin, held Dec. 15-16, in Orlando, Fla. Whiskey, whose registered name is GCHP
CH Pinnacle Tennessee Whiskey, triumphed over
more than 5,000 entries to earn a $50,000 cash prize.
Owned by Justin Smithey and Dr. Ken Latimer and
bred by Smithey and Yvonne Sovereign, Whiskey
was crowned National Champion by Best in Show
judge Mr. Elliott B. Weiss.
Combined with other weekend events including
the AKC Agility Invitational, the AKC Obedience
Classic, the AKC Royal Canin National All-Breed
Puppy and Junior Stakes and the Junior events, the
overall show totals topped 9,023 entries.
The Reserve Best in Show winner was GCHS CH
Sammantic Querida, a Samoyed known as “
Querida,” owned by Barbara Bruns and Wolfgang Stamp.
After winning Best of Breed competitions, the
following top dogs went on to win in their respec-
tive groups and compete for Best in Show:
Sporting: GCHS CH Nani Breica N Crosswinds
Aloha, a Weimaraner known as “Kevin,” owned by
Derek Beatty and Suzanne Burns and C. Grisell and
J. Doud
Hound: Whiskey
Working: Querida
Terrier: GCHG CH Roserock’s
My Eyes Adored You, a Norwich terrier known as “Isaac,”
owned by Ellen Lucas
Toy: GCHP CH Hill Country’s
Puttin’ On The Ritz, a pug
known as “Biggie,” owned by
Carolyn Koch
Non-Sporting: GCHP CH Le Petit Prince De La Bete, a French
bulldog known as “Princeton,”

Elite Clever Endeavor PT, a border collie known
as “Slick,” owned by Ricki Johnson, J. Frank Baylis,
and Ronni Delay and bred by Ronni Delay
Other top dogs awarded during the two-day
event included the following:
• Whiskey won the Best Bred-By-Exhibitor in
Show title.
• Aperture I Think I’m Going To Like It Here, a
whippet known as “Lizzie,” owned by Amy Reynolds and bred by Julie Poole, won Puppy of the Year.
• GCHG CH Lamz Strike A Pose RN CAA
CGC TKN, a Bedlington terrier known as “Vogue,”
owned by Laurie Zembrzuski and Gabrielle Gilbeau
and bred by Laurie Zembrzuski and Gabrielle Gilbeau, won the AKC National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) Finals Best in Show, prevailing over an
invitation-only entry of 737 dogs.
• Starfire’s B’ Anya, an Azawakh owned and
bred by Jose Cabrera, was awarded Best in Miscellaneous Group.
In the Junior Showmanship competition, for
handlers from between 9 to 18 years of age, Mary
Claire Ctibor with her Irish setter GCHS CH Beau-briar’s Best Kept Secret was awarded the coveted
title of Best Junior Handler, along with a $2,000
scholarship.
