Offer Dietary Diversity
Stocking a variety of diets, both for senior dogs and young pups, helps retailers build
customer loyalty and drive sales.

Few items keep customers com- ing back like dog food, and for independent pet retailers, offering a variety of high-quality diets is
key to keeping their attention and
business. ;ith age;specific diets, retailers can cater to customers’ needs
and generate repeat sales.

“People with puppies are very fo-
cused on getting puppy food,” said
Lisa Shoun, co-owner of Andy’s Pet
Shop in San Jose, Calif. “More often
they go for the puppy [offerings].”
It seems that customers want reas-
surance that the food they’re buying
is appropriate for puppies, she added.
She’s had success offering Taste of the
Wild puppy formulations, and Taste
of the Wild foods are her best-sellers
in general, Shoun said.
“[Customers are] interested in
really good-quality food,” she said.
“We really don’t offer cheap foods.

Dog owners are increasingly
aware of the advantages of offering
quality foods to their dogs, and retail-
ers can benefit by providing custom-
ers with information and support.
“Owners have learned how im-
portant it is to provide pets with com-
plete and balanced nutrition from the
time their pet is a puppy,” said Paul
Cooke, vice president of industry de-
velopment at Nestlé Purina PetCare
Co. in St. Louis. “With a larger share of pets now considered to be
‘seniors’—any age above 7 years—owners are actively seeking nu-
tritional solutions to keep their pet happy and healthy as they age.”
As the public perception of human dietary issues continues to
expand, the trend has carried over into the pet space, industry par-

“Concerned pet parents are hyper-focused on nutrition as the key
to whole body health and longevity,” said Jen Loesch, general manager for Sojos in Minneapolis.

of Fresh, Raw
Food With the
Whether you call it “
freeze-dried” or “dehydrated” or
“shelf-stable raw,” what matters
most is that Sojos combines the
nutrition and taste of fresh, raw
food—with the convenience and
affordability of kibble.
In short, it’s raw made easy.
Just pour Sojos Complete into a
bowl, add water, and magic happens. Within minutes the 100%
natural ingredients spring back to
life with the flavors, textures and
abundant nutrition possible only
with real, raw food.
And yet freeze-dried Sojos Complete is surprisingly affordable. In
fact, an 8 lb. bag rehydrates to
more than 40 lbs. of nutritious,
fresh food. That’s less per serving
than comparable premium grain-free dog foods.
Sojos Complete is offered with
turkey, beef, lamb or goat as the
number one ingredient. And because Sojos’ gentle freeze-drying
process never exceeds 115°, all
the natural enzymes in raw meat
are carefully protected. Said another way, none of the natural
goodness is cooked out.
