The Healers Spot-Lite LED jacket and the Brolly Retractable Dog Leash won the ECRM/Pet Product News Buyers Choice
Awards during ECRM’s Pet EPPS held in
April in Oak Brook, Ill.—an in-person meeting
during which retail buyers and suppliers of
pet products were brought together for private one-on-one planning sessions. More than
100 buyers from mass retail and pet specialty
were in attendance.
The two winners were selected from more
than 40 products reviewed by attendees during
the New Product Innovation Hour. Buyers cast
their votes based on product characteristics
such as ingredients, innovation and packaging.
Healers Pet Care earned first place with
its Spot-Lite LED jacket, which is made with
Dintex soft-shell fabric that is waterproof, wind
resistant and breathable. Designed to be highly
visible at night, the jacket features reflective
stripes and either a fleece back or light mesh
for use both in the summer and winter. It is
available in a variety of bright colors. The company also makes a line of bandanas.
Terri Entler, CEO and president of Healers
Pet Care, said she was overjoyed that her product was chosen.
“It validates our hard work and efforts to
provide the highest-quality products that keep
pets safe and healthy,” Entler said. “With this
new line of LED lighted apparel, customers
now have a machine-washable jacket or ban-
dana that enables their pets to be highly visible
at night and are fun to wear.”
Brolly Pet’s Retractable Dog Leash, the
second place winner, features a patented four-
finger-hole grip that is designed to conform to
the user’s hand to provide maximum support
when walking a dog. The leash is equipped
with what the company calls the Get Hook’d
System, which enables dog owners to easily
clip Brolly Pet accessories, including poop bag
dispensers, dog ponchos, travel pet bowls,
treat bags and more, directly onto their Brolly
Retractable Dog Leash.
Greg Edson, CEO of Brolly Pet Products,
was on hand to receive the award.
“When I heard our company name called,
I stood up and felt so proud of what we had
accomplished,” Edson said. “It meant so much
having the buyers select our retractable dog
leash among all of the terrific pet products that
were on display.
“We are excited to work with the buyers
to introduce the Brolly Retractable Dog Leash
and pet accessories to their stores and act as
a category captain to ensure the maximum
performance of the pet category.”

This year’s America’s Family Pet Expo, held at the Orange County Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., April 28 to 30, wowed attendees with an array of fun events and

“[This] gave our vendors a great opportunity to not only sell
their products and services but, in many cases, to do consumer
research on new products, colors, etc.,” said Doug Poindexter,
president of the World Pet Association, the creator of America’s
Family Pet Expo.
Over the course of the weekend, attendees adopted more than
A key component of the expo is educating consumers about
responsible pet care, Poindexter noted.
“We donate a majority of the booth space to organizations to
help educate the public about their specific species and what is
needed to maintain that animal for the life of the animal so it does
not end up in a shelter,” he added.
America’s Family Pet Expo showcased a remarkable number of
species—some to adopt, some simply to admire—from dogs and
cats to chickens, donkeys, pigeons, tortoises, fish, pot-bellied pigs,
kangaroos and boas, to name just a few.
“It always amazes me how much joy seeing all the animals at
the pet expo brings to the public,” Poindexter said. “Seeing the
attendees’ eyes light up when they see an animal they may have
never seen before or they get to pet one of the animals … Animals
give us so much more than, I believe, we give them, and seeing that
in action every year at the pet expo is, by far, my favorite thing.”
