First place was awarded to

Abandoned ;et ;escue (A;;),
;outh Florida’s largest no-;ill
shelter in Ft. ;auderdale, Fla.
Although ;ansen has a full-time
;ob, she spends e;ery wa;ing
hour that she’s not at wor; at the
shelter, o;erseeing day-to-day
operations. ;he can be found in
the medical bay, administering
to sic; or in;ured dogs and cats
that are left outside their door
or found wandering the streets,
or in the dog and cat areas, cuddling with the animals and cleaning their en;ironment. ;ansen
handles pit bulls, which are the
hardest animals to place, she
said, adding that she has adopted
fi;e of them herself. ;ansen also
is a familiar presence at the front
des;, handling administrati;e
and financial duties, as well as
greeting ;isitors and o;erseeing
the adoption process.
;;he is the heart and soul of

tirelessly to ensure all dogs are
placed into lo;ing permanent
homes. ;e has made se;eral
cross-country trips to help trans-
port these dogs to their new
homes, and he also is building a
facility at his personal residence
to help e;pand his ability to help
more dogs.

City, ;e;. ;ets of the ;omeless
belie;es in the healing power
of companion pets and of the
human-animal bond, which is
;ery important in the li;es of
many homeless, who find so-
lace, protection and compan-
ionship through their pets, ac-
cording to the organi;ation.
;he homeless care for their
pets on limited resources, so

;eyer said. ;he mission of ;ets
of the ;omeless is to pro;ide
basic emergency ;eterinary
care to their pets and, thus, re-
lie;e the anguish and an;iety
of not being able to pro;ide for
