Each year, consumers shopping for pet accessories and food are increasingly drawn to products that are made in the USA, a trend that follows shopping
patterns across many product categories.

in Markham, Ill., said that as consumers become more
educated about pet food, pet owners want to go one
step further than buying products that are made in the
USA—they are looking for those foods sourced from
100 percent USA-grown ingredients.
“Those ingredients should be natural, high quality
and provide unique health benefits for their beloved
furry family members,” Sher said. “Freshness and
quality matters. Evanger’s has always operated with

That’s why the company gets approximately 90
percent of its ingredients from farms within 50 miles of

don’t bring it up,” he said. “We have found a lot of the
people who frequent our store are very knowledge-
able about food, treats and supplements, and they are
concerned about ingredients where they are not sure
of the origin. People seem to be more in tune with the
question of how ingredients in pet food are sourced
than they used to be.”
Sher said that retailers should consider highlighting
manufacturers that truly live up to a made in the USA
label in special in-store displays, a section or endcaps.

and also communication channels like social media,
monthly e-newsletters, in-store signage, coupons, sample packs, live demo days, special events such as the

much more,” she said.
As the category grows, Sher added, there’s a need
for consumers to be aware that there is still much to
learn about a product even when it bears the American
flag on its packaging.

safety,” she said. “It’s so important to understand a
company’s culture, beliefs and practices to know the
full story behind the products they sell.”
