When we begin losing confidence in a decision we have made, it’s less about the object, person or activity and more about how we view our- selves. Most people are living each day from one decision to another and never truly spend enough time achieving clarity about the “why” or the goal behind their choices. Most entrepreneurs get good at setting a dream goal or objective; however, often, they spin out or get bored and
drop the goal soon after going for it. The problem is that the decision wasn’t aligned with
the emotional connection to the “why” or the end result of the goal. The decision was
impulsive, and impulsivity as a driver for goal setting or decision-making is not going to
sustain the results you want over time. It’s a quick way to end up feeling broke, busted
and disgusted.
With that in mind, let’s lay out two pointers that will help you to change the way you
make decisions so that the next time, no matter the size or scope of the decision, you will
understand the foundational work to put in place for maximum success.
The Why: It’s the driving force behind what you do. It is the motivator, the cheerleader
in your corner and the part that makes you know that you know you are on the right path.
It is your truth. Knowing why we do what we do at an absolute heart level, where no one
can persuade you off your mark, is the key to our long-term success in life, business and
decision-making. When we make a decision that does not add up with our why, then we
are, more often than not, swayed off of that decision. The reason is actually pretty simple.
Your why creates a powerful picture in your mind of exactly what you will achieve,
who you are and how you will succeed. When we have that picture pure in our mind and
heart, we are unstoppable and indecisiveness never creeps in to interfere. Studies have
shown that human beings always move in the direction of the dominant picture in their
mind, so when your why creates that strong picture, and the heart attaches emotion to
it, you are rock steady on point.
So, you first have to know your why (get that dominant picture) before you decide to
move from A to B, hire a new individual, open a new location or rebrand your business.
Your why is your compelling call to action that will bring clarity to all you do.
The Goal: Believe it or not, the goal comes after identifying your why. Most peo-
ple get confused, and they
set the goal first and then
look for their why, and that
is when we get caught up
with indecisiveness. Setting
a goal to increase revenue,
hire three new employees,
train a manager, get more
time out of the shop—those
are easy to put forward and
go after. But they, alone, are
not sustainable. And when
the going gets tough, the goal
starts wavering. You start sec-
ond-guessing and question-
ing yourself, the new hires,
the idea of more time out of
the shop, etc. You begin to
look negatively at the goal
altogether. The momentum
took you to launch, but after the excitement of setting the goal became work, it was chal-
lenging and then it wasn’t fun anymore. Or it became costly and your account reflected
poorly on the goal too.
The problem with setting a goal before knowing your why is that when the tough gets
going, the goal starts crumbling. When our why is first and our goal aligns with it, we
are soundly in the driver’s seat with our foot on the gas, revving the engines. Envision
an oak tree standing in the middle of a beautiful field, all on its own, out there shining
for everyone to marvel at its splendor and glory. That tree in all its splendor is your goal
achieved. And, what lies beneath the mighty oak is a root system that is vast and deep.
Without that system working underground, nothing above could withstand an unexpected storm or seasons of drought. Without the system firmly in place underneath the
surface, all that is above ground has no anchor securing it in place.
The roots are like your why
securing your success toward
achieving your goals. Align
your decisions to your why
every time, and you will see
a flourishing business appear.
Focus your hiring decision
on your why, and you will
have a team that is committed
to producing extraordinary results. Train your team on the
why of your business mission
and purpose, and they will be
the champions, taking your
business toward your goals.
