As a pet specialty retailer, what is your favorite part of the day?
Mary Knight: My favorite part of the day is meeting new customers who have come in
on a referral and want to upgrade their pet’s diet. It’s very exciting and rewarding to
educate our customers about the benefits of proper nutrition, to get to know them on a
personal level and to follow their pet’s progress.
What are the most challenging aspects of what you do every day?
Knight: Making sure our employees are up-to-date on new products and keeping up with
inventory. It’s not good to run out of product and then have that product back-ordered!
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received from a customer?
Knight: I love it when our customers come back and tell us what a difference the food or
supplements are making in their pets’ lives. We’ve been told that our shop has the best
selection of products, is easy to shop and has the best customer service.
What makes your particular niche of the pet specialty market—natural pet products and nutrition—so unique and fun to be in?
Knight: Every day we deal with happy people who love their pets. We all live a healthy
lifestyle and encourage and educate our customers to do the same. It’s nice to see that
a-ha moment when the light bulb turns on!
What’s the most notable change you’ve seen in pet specialty since you started out?
Knight: The acceptance of the raw food diet. When we started out 16 years ago, we carried
raw food, but only a small percentage of our customers would feed it. It took a lot of educating and a long learning curve, but now most stores carry some form of the raw diet.
Given all the changes that have occurred in the pet market in recent years, where do you see
your particular niche of the market heading in the future? Do you foresee growth?
Knight: It is important to always be ahead of the game; meaning, looking for new trends
and weeding out products that no longer serve a purpose. With the box stores beginning to acquire some of the family-owned pet food businesses, we are constantly
looking to build relationships with vendors who do not sell to the box stores or large
internet pet stores. We support the businesses that support us. We foresee growth as the
public is finally realizing that spending more on their pet is worth it, and it gives them
peace of mind knowing they are doing the best they can for their pets. ◊
