As a pet specialty retailer with a
store specializing in birds, what is
your favorite part of the day?;
Alycia Antheunisse: Seeing return
customers and helping them
with whatever their questions
may be. They become family.
What are the most challenging
aspects of what you do every
day?;
Antheunisse: Attempting to educate those who already have
all of the answers. It goes along
with trying to debunk some
of the general misnomers in
aviculture. People are always
learning and should be open
to new ways and ideas.
What’s the best compliment
you’ve ever received from a
customer?;
Antheunisse: That buying a
bird from us 18 years ago was
one of the best decisions they
ever made. I still see them every month for grooming and
supplies.
What makes your particular niche
of the pet specialty market so
unique and fun to be in?;
Antheunisse: I think a lot of
industry people lose sight
of the fact that live animals
drive the rest of the industry’s
sales. Without the animal, who
needs the supplies? Birds are
definitely one of the more exciting animals to work with!
Given all the changes that have
occurred in the pet market in
recent years, where do you see
your particular niche of the market heading in the future? Do
you foresee growth, or will it be
a specialty reserved for the most
enthusiastic hobbyists?;
Antheunisse: I see growth online, not in small stores. In addition, sourcing birds to sell in
stores is becoming harder and
harder. ◊
