There is great impetus these days for the industry—pet food manufacturers, in particular—to be able to proclaim and prove its commitment to food safety and best practices in
ingredient sourcing and manufacturing. So, this fall, in the spirit of
transparency, Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. invited Pet Product News
and other trade media representatives to a behind-the-scenes
tour of its manufacturing facility in Clinton, Iowa. For PPN writer
Clay Jackson, the tour laid out a compelling picture of the Clinton
operation. He was struck by the sheer enormity of the plant, the
detailed attention paid to the various facets of manufacturing and
the enthusiasm of the representatives who were part of the tour.
Yet, we understand that a media tour is just that. This tour was
designed by Purina to demonstrate to,
and through, the media its strengths in pet
diet innovation, nutrition research, manufactur-
ing technology, food safety and other aspects
of food production.
Our article won’t answer every question that some of our
retailer readers might have if they were to take a tour themselves,
and the visit did not yield an exposé of any kind, nor would we
expect it to. Still, we were grateful for the opportunity to spend
time learning more about this legacy brand, and on page 6, we
share with you the highlights of that trip.
